Awakening Our Energy Through Breathing

In biology, energy comes from food, water, and sunlight. Our cells convert nutrients into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which acts like a battery to power different cellular functions. All living beings—mammals, plants, and even microorganisms—need energy to survive and thrive.

In yoga, energy is known as Prana, the life force that flows through the body. In Chinese medicine, this vital energy is called Chi. In essence, energy is life itself—it powers every cell and keeps life functioning. In yoga, energy is known as Prana, the life force that flows through the body. Overall, energy is a life force that powers every cell, keeping life functioning.

In several of my articles, I discuss the connection between energy and breathing. For example, gentle techniques can help stretch and contract the diaphragm using a sandbag, releasing tension, creating more space for the lungs, and enhancing oxygen flow. Yoga postures also expand the lungs and deepen the breath, increasing the body’s energy supply.

Why “breathing” relates to “energy”? What kind of sparks will fly between them?

I like to think of energy as a shopping cart filled with essential supplies. Each cell has its own special ‘checkout’, especially with the mitochondria acting as the powerhouse, producing most of the cell’s adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Through full, mindful breathing, it’s as if we’re pushing this cart, delivering energy and nutrients throughout the body wherever they are needed, helping to nourish and even heal areas that lack support.

Without full, mindful breathing, this shopping cart of essential supplies cannot reach its destination completely. We can think of breathing as the vital transportation system—when we breathe correctly, it’s like filling the cart with full gas, allowing energy and nutrients to travel efficiently throughout the body.

Positive awareness creates powerful, life-supporting energy, while negative thoughts can generate darker, heavier energy. By practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, we awaken our internal energy, refresh our mind, and reconnect with the life force that fuels us.

Keeping our energy positive is essential, and practices like meditation and conscious breathing help us maintain it.
