The human skeleton is the framework of the body and consists of 206 bones. The main parts of the skeleton include the skull, spine, rib cage, and limbs.

The spine, also called the vertebral column, is one of the most important structures in the body. It not only supports posture but also plays critical roles in protecting the spinal cord, supporting movement, and maintaining overall body function.

The spine includes:

Cervical spine (neck): 7 vertebrae with 8 pairs of cervical nerves.

Thoracic spine (chest): 12 vertebrae with 12 pairs of thoracic nerves.

Lumbar spine (lower back): 5 vertebrae with 5 pairs of lumbar nerves.

Sacrum: 5 fused vertebrae with 5 pairs of sacral nerves.

Coccyx (tailbone): 3–5 fused vertebrae with 1 pair of coccygeal nerves.

Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs, which act as cushions and shock absorbers for the spine. Maintaining a healthy space between the vertebrae is important to help prevent disc compression, nerve pressure, pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Each nerve that exits between the vertebrae is connected to different functions and areas of the body. Sometimes, pain that seems to come from a specific organ may actually be related to a pinched or irritated nerve affecting that area, which can create referred pain patterns throughout the body.

I once had a student who shared his experience of severe gallbladder pain. His doctor believed the pain was caused by gallstones, so he underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder. However, after the surgery, no gallstones were found inside the gallbladder, and the pain still remained.

Later, he visited a Chinese medicine doctor, who examined his spine and found signs of a possible pinched nerve affecting the region associated with his symptoms. After receiving spinal and soft-tissue treatment, his pain was significantly relieved. This story highlights how the spine and nervous system can sometimes influence how pain is perceived in different parts of the body.

The spinal nerves and musculoskeletal structures are also closely connected to other important body systems. For example, the lungs and breathing are influenced by the thoracic spine and rib cage, which expand and contract to allow proper respiration. When posture is restricted or the upper back is stiff, breathing efficiency can be affected.

In addition, tendons and ligaments play a key role in connecting muscles to bones and stabilizing joints. These structures rely on proper alignment and movement patterns; when the spine or surrounding joints are misaligned, it may place extra strain on tendons and ligaments, leading to discomfort or reduced mobility.

Muscles throughout the body are also deeply connected to spinal nerve signals. The brain sends movement instructions through the spinal cord and nerves to activate muscles. If a nerve is irritated or compressed, it may lead to muscle tightness, weakness, or pain in specific areas.

Overall, the spine, nerves, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and breathing system all work together as an interconnected system, where changes in one area can influence function and sensation in another. The spinal nerves and musculoskeletal structures are also closely connected to other important body systems. For example, the lungs and breathing are influenced by the thoracic spine and rib cage, which expand and contract to allow proper respiration. When posture is restricted or the upper back is stiff, breathing efficiency can be affected.

Yoga mainly focuses on breathing and relaxing the spine. Through slow breathing and gentle movement, yoga helps calm the nervous system and improve oxygen flow in the body.

By connecting breathing with spine movement, yoga helps the body feel more supported, relaxed, and aligned, while providing overall benefits for both the body and mind.
